What
will metro Augusta look like and be like in the year 2020? To
answer that question, Leadership Augusta is sponsoring a community
visioning initiative called Destination 2020.
"We
want to hear from as many people as possible. We want them to
paint a picture for us of what this community can become," said
Ed Tarver, who co-chairs Destination 2020 along with E.G. Meybohm.
"Our goal is to identify common ground and create enthusiasm for
carrying the vision forward."
People
from throughout Augusta, North Augusta and Columbia County will
be encouraged to share their thinking in one of nine town-hall
meetings at various locations throughout the region. A community
vision facilitator, Jon Abercrombie from Civic Strategies, Inc.
will guide the two-hour meetings.
Meetings
will be held at various locations throughout May. During the summer,
task forces will digest the information collected at the town
hall meetings. The task forces will develop draft vision statements
on specific topics such as education or transportation. In addition
to the town hall meetings, Civic Strategies personnel and the
task forces will review existing plans and documents from other
organizations. Finally, these inputs will be incorporated into
an overall vision to be presented at a community forum in September.
"We hope that this community vision will excite and inspire us.
LetŐs use it to make this a place our children and grandchildren
will be proud to live in," said Tarver.
