COMCAST BREAKS GROUND ON $5 MILLION FACILITY

Comcast Cable Communications, Inc., the area's largest cable television and broadband provider, broke ground on a new $5 million, 45,000 square foot facility in the River Shoals development area just off Riverwatch Parkway in September.

The project, expected to be completed by spring of 2001, will house the company's administrative offices, television studio, technical service center, warehouse and customer service facilities, which are currently spread throughout the Augusta area in four separate locations. The facility, which will also house a new 50-seat telemarketing call center for Comcast's Southern region, will provide dozens of new jobs for the area. The call center will field calls for their entire region including Augusta, Savannah, Charleston, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Huntsville.

Comcast chose to have three front line employees man the shovels at the groundbreaking instead of company executives because, according to Doug McMillan, Comcast area vice president, "they're the ones serving our customers every day, and since they're out front every other day, they should be out front today too."

"We're thrilled with the economic development from the new construction and even happier to learn of new jobs coming to our area," said Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce President Jim West.

Newcomer Event
WELCOMES NEW SOLDIERS, FAMILIES TO FORT GORDON

The Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce, along with Fort Gordon and members of the local community, teamed up August 1 to host the first ever welcome event for new service members and their families in the Fort Gordon Reserve Center. Seventy-five vendors from the Augusta metro area set up booths to advertise the many things our community has to offer its newest residents.

While children created artwork and watched Disney movies, parents visited booths representing area utilities, banks, civic organizations and other vendors.

This was the first time that an event like this has been held at Fort Gordon. Summer is a strategic transition time for military families, so the event was designed to help ease some of that transition. While newcomers to the area opened checking accounts, signed up for power and learned about the Augusta arts and cultural scene, they also enjoyed pizza provided by Papa Johns and sample foods from Semolina and Hooters.

The Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce salutes our participating members for ensuring the success of this event and helping to welcome some of the area's newest residents in style.
